Many in over-50 crowd hitting gym | The Journal Gazette.

I can attest to this.  I just turned 50 this summer, and have been thinking more and more about the need for a gym membership, or attending a fitness club.

What do YOU do to stay fit?  Since I live a good distance away from the closest town, I have been trying to work out at home.  But it is difficult – too many distractions.  There is always something else that needs to be done, and it calls to me while I am trying to exercise.  Maybe a trip to the gym is a good way to keep me from getting sidetracked and stay engaged.

I’ll let you know what I decide.  :)

I started my weight loss journey at home. Over the years I’ve been a part of group fitness classes but still I prefer to go it alone. I started running by using a version of the “Couch to 5k” program to help me see progress every week. Then, I found a free fitness website called SparkPeople.com to track my food and fitness as well as gather tons of information from the articles and support from the social aspect of the site. I love that everyone on the site is heading in the right direction. I’ve been on it for 3 years now (???) and have never had one person try to sell me anything OR be unpleasant. It is wonderful to have a place to go where there is inspiration, motivation and information all in the same place! So that’s what I do. Walking or running (ideally with some weights and some stretching thrown in but hey, who can be perfect???) at home or on my workout hour at work. Going it alone isn’t a bad thing … either way you have to have discipline to make the plan work.

Thanks for the comments, and the advice about SparkPeople.com – I may have to check that out! Sounds like a big help, and something very useful. I agree that you need to have discipline and a plan when you go it alone. And I live a bit of a distance from a gym or fitness center, so working out at home is a good option for me. Just need to get the discipline and plan in place! :)
