Christmas Craft Ideas for Kids

One of the most enjoyable parts of the holidays for us is the large amount of Christmas craft ideas for kids out there today.  Family holiday traditions that we have created over the years often center around the kiddos making crafts, baking cookies, etc.

My daughters and I always go over to my parents’ house and bake cookies the week before Christmas.  My mom hosts the grandkids for an afternoon of cookie-baking and gingerbread-house-building.  The kids love this, and get to brag about the cookies they baked while we eat them on Christmas day.  Of course, each kid comes home with a plate of goodies on baking day as well.  And my dad always seems to magically know when the first pan of cookies is coming out of the oven, and shows up for a taste test.  His Christmas cookie “radar” is impeccable!

Several years ago, both my daughters (Rebecca was about 12, and Rachel was about 18 months) made “wreaths” with cardboard and construction paper.  We drew around their hand on cardstock, then cut it out and used it as a template to cut out lots of little green construction paper handprints.  The little handprint “leaves” were attached around an 18″ cardboard ring, tying a red bow at the top.  These wreaths still decorate our house each Christmas season … sometimes over my daughters protests.  They may roll their eyes, but Mom emerges victorious each year.  I will never throw those keepsakes away, and plan to pass them down to each girl when she starts her own family.

What kind of items do you need to create Christmas craft ideas for kids –

  • toilet paper rolls
  • construction paper of various colors, but especially red and green
  • glue or glue sticks
  • glitter
  • pipe cleaners
  • cardboard boxes
  • paint – finger paint, or water-based paint
  • old Christmas cards to cut up
  • wrapping paper
  • fabric, lace, ribbon, etc.

Here is a compilation of some Christmas craft ideas to create with our kids during the holiday season.  There are ideas for ornaments for the tree using mason jar rings, toilet paper rolls and popsicle sticks; ideas for wall art and paper garlands; ideas for gifts that kids can make for family members.
